Taurus is a Latin word meaning ‘bull’ and for centuries the bull has been a symbol of strength, tenacity, virility and power. People born under the sign of Taurus tend to be very patient, practical and dedicated people. So throwing a few ropes over our old front-row forward also born with this star sign has not stopped us. We look forward to these new beginnings and to continue producing exceptional wines.

With the Matariki (Pleiades) star cluster sitting under the Taurus constellation it is fitting that Matariki Wines now sits under Taurus Wine Group Limited and the O’Connor legacy lives on.

Matariki Taurus 'A Celebration’ 2007 - 5 Stars

Hand-picked fruit, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% each Merlot and Cabernet Franc, 12% Syrah and 1% Syrah, from Gimblett Road, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged over 2 years in barrel. Very full, deep, black-hued red colour, still youthful in appearance. The bouquet is full and densely concentrated with voluminous complex aromas of savoury dark red berry fruit, currants, game and green olives, smoothly interwoven with undergrowth, spices and oak. Medium-full to full bodied, the palate features sweetly rich flavours of savoury red berry and plum fruits with a complex and individual amalgam of undergrowth, olive tapenade and secondary game and vegetal notes. The palate has a strong tannin structure and core, balanced by the fruit succulence, and the flavours follow a powerfully driven line to a concentrated, firm- textured and lingering finish. This is a full-flavoured, complex and well-structured Bordeaux-blend with rich, sweet fruit and savoury development. Match with roasted game meat, casseroles and hard cheeses over the next 10-12+ years. 19.0-/20 RRP $80.00

Matariki Taurus ‘A Celebration’ 2007 – 5 Stars
This wine celebrates 30 years of winegrowing for the O’Connors, and it’s a formidable red from a stunning vintage. It’s sweetly perfumed on the nose displaying dark fruit, vanilla, cocoa, truffle and floral notes. The palate is powerfully expressed, yet elegant and poised, with silky texture leading to a superbly long, expansive finish. Tannins are fine and in abundance, providing beautiful structure and length. Gloriously delicious. A blend of 39% cabernet sauvignon , 24% merlot, 24% cabernet franc, 13% syrah, 1% malbec. At its best: now to 2020. 96/100

Matariki Taurus ‘A Celebration’ 2007 – 4.5 Stars
The 2007 vintage (4.5*) was produced by Matariki to celebrate 30 years of winegrowing in the Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay. Matured for over two years in French oak barriques, it is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (39 percent), Merlot (24 percent), Cabernet Franc (24 percent) and Malbec (1 percent). The colour is deep and bright; the palate is still quite fresh and youthful, with vibrant red berry flavours, hints of blackcurrants and nuts, and excellent concentration. Best drinking 2016+
