Matariki ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet 2010 - 4 Stars
Full, deep, dark ruby-red with garnet hues and some brick on the rim. This has a full, well-proportioned, densely packed bouquet of savoury red plum fruit softly interwoven with layers of dried herbs, currants and leaf, with complex secondary earthiness and game nuances adding detail. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rounded with plenty of depth and presence at the core, with concentrated flavours of dark, savoury, earthy, plum fruit alongside curranty notes. A firm, drying tannin line emerges to provide grainy textures and structure. There is fresh acidity which enlivens the fruit and mouthfeel to balance the extraction, and the wine carries through to a long, juicy, vibrant finish with fine, firm tannins and licorice elements. This is a well-concentrated Merlot/Cabernet blend with savoury plum and currant flavours showing some secondary complexity, but is still fresh and firm. Match with roast lamb and beef over the next 6-7+ years. Hand-picked fruit, 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Gimblett Gravels fermented to 13.9% alc., the wine aged 2 years in 50% new French oak barriques. 18.0/20 Jul 2015 RRP $36.00

Matariki ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2010 - 4 Stars
Syrah from New Zealand – Hawke’s Bay

Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is soft and densely packed with harmoniously integrated aromas of savoury dark red berry fruits melded with Middle Eastern spices, pepper, and secondary development notes of earth and cedar, unfolding milk chocolate notes in the glass. Medium-bodied, smooth and integrated flavours of savoury and spicy red fruits are interwoven with liquorice, cedar, pepper and herbal detail. Elevated acidity lends a liveliness and refreshing mouthfeel, and the wine follows a firm, but fine, grainy-textured tannin line that carries through to a long, spicy, cedary finish. This is a firm, lively Syrah with harmoniously entwined savoury, spicy and cedary secondary flavours. Match with lamb and slow-cooked game meat dishes over the next 4-5+ years. Hand-picked fruit from the Gimblett Gravels fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged over 18 months in predominantly French oak. 17.0+/20 Feb 2015 RRP $36.00

Matariki ‘Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 - 4 Stars
A well integrated and developed bouquet with aromas of plum and leather; blackberry and oak spice; overall, vanilla, chocolate and mild violet nuances. On the palate – dry, integrated and drinking very nicely; flavours reflect the nose and the tannins along with acidity are still framing the wine well; Overall very nice with a medium+ finish.
