Wine Notes

Matariki 2002 Sangiovese

Wine Note

This is our second vintage of this classic Italian variety. Hand harvested at optimum ripeness from selected parcels of grapes from our Gimblett Road vineyard. The wine was matured in French oak barriques for 21 months. Aromas of dried fruit and red cherries combine with complex characters of spice, plum and hints of orange peel to give a lovely soft rich mouth feel. A perfect accompaniment to traditional Italian cuisine featuring tomato or mushroom based sauces, casseroles or slow cooked Mediterranean flavours.

Vinification

The grapes were gently destemmed and crushed into the tanks for fermentation. The juice was inoculated with a selected yeast and fermented for approximately 7 days, reaching a maximum temperature of about 28°C. The ferment was pumped over 3 times per day during the height of fermentation, gently extracting colour, flavour and tannins. Post fermentation the wine drained the skins were pressed out. The free run wine and the pressings were combined and put to barrel to complete malolactic fermentation. During the 21 months the wine spent in barrel it was racked 4 times. During blended we decided to add a small amount of Malbec to deepen the colour and add some extra fruit and spice. The wine was fined and filtered pre bottling.
