Matariki 2001 Pinot Noir

Wine Note

A delicious medium bodied Pinot Noir with complex perfumed cherry fruit and earthy overtones, typical of Pinot Noir. Serve with foods such as Mushroom Risotto or Confit de Canard.

Harvest

After an extended ripening period the fruit was hand picked at optimum ripeness and flavour levels.

Vinification

All the different clones of Pinot were hand picked separately and kept separate until blending. The grapes were gently destemed into fermentation vessels. We cold soaked the grapes for 7-10 days after which time the vessels were inoculated with yeast. Fermentation temperature peaked at 30C and lasted 7 days. Some of the fermenting juice was transferred to barrels at 4 brix. Malo-lactic fermentation was carried out in barriques and the wine was matured in barrels for 12 months prior to bottling.

Composition

This wine is 100% Hawkes Bay Pinot Noir produced from Matariki Wines Gimblett Rd site.

Barrel Percentage

The wine was matured in 40% new French oak, 40% one year old French oak and 20% two year and older French oak.

Bottling

The wine was bottled on the 5th of June 2002. At bottling the analyses was as follows:

TA 6.3g/l 
RS dry 
Alc 13.0%v/v

Sensory

Colour: Deep cherry red in colour 
Aroma: Complex perfumed cherry fruit with subtle earthy overtones. 
Palate: Medium bodied wine displaying sweet ripe fruit mid palate, good acid balance and lengthy finish.
